What is Purgatory?
The fire of God's mercy.
Purgatory is not a punishment, but an expression of God's infinite mercy. It is the state of final purification for souls who die in grace, but who still have wounds to heal or debts to purify before fully entering Heaven.
Catechism of the Catholic Church, n. 1030:
“Those who die in the grace and friendship of God, but imperfectly purified, although they are assured of their eternal salvation, undergo a purification after their death, in order to obtain the holiness necessary to enter the joy of Heaven.”
Catechism n. 1031:
“The Church calls this final purification of the elect purgatory, which is completely distinct from the punishment of the damned.”
Saint John Paul II:
“Purgatory is not a place, but a condition of existence.”
Saint Catherine of Genoa:
“The soul that throws itself into Purgatory has a happiness greater than it could find anywhere else in the world, because it knows it is destined for Heaven.”
